There is an invite portrait show going on in Sacramento soon that will feature portraits painted by some really fine artists. They have chosen my portrait of " Sam Hyde Harris" as the postcard flyer to advertise the event. I just realized after looking at the date that I double booked another art gig on that same day. I was asked the other day to do a live demo for the Roseville Art Association the afternoon of the reception date of the Portrait Show. Am I foolish enough to try and cram in a paying gig with a hand shaker? You bet!
Thanks again for all the comments trickling in about the new website.
I am bursting to write about some things I've been reading on the FASO blogs about marketing. I think there is a misconception about wanting to " change the world" with our Art and creating a " Purple Cow".
But lately, my ol carpal tunnel problems have reduced me to typing at the bare minimum ... all that uploading did me in.
So my thoughts will be ... " What is the CONTENT of that CHANGE " ?... hey .. even volcanoes and tsunamies change things ... is that good?Is trying to change the world with our Art an Abuse of Art? Does it then become Propaganda?

I'm dying to know what the purple cow is, but yikes--carpal tunnel. I gave myself tennis elbow painting some walls a few weeks ago, and working on the computer seems to aggravate that, too. The new website looks great. Congrats on both gigs. You do stay busy. Sometimes just reading about it wears me out.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the portrait show and the live demo. I'm with Connie - it wears me out just to think about it.
ReplyDeleteAs to your musings about changing the world with our art or is it just propaganda - just keep your eyes on the prize - the real purpose behind our reason for being here. :-)
Sorry that sounded a little "preachy" - didn't mean it that way just that it is so easy to get caught up in our own self-importance and to lose sight of what is really important.
ReplyDeleteMary ... I got what you meant .... I hear this catch phrase of " paint for change in the World" and it is so content free....
ReplyDeletef
Love that portrait. It SHOULD be the flyer...
ReplyDeleteMary, after having several cookies :-) I
have been thinking about the purpose of our art.
I don't have answers, but I do think it is important - if only because we were created to do this, and at least in doing it, we are fulfilling part of our purpose here. It might not change the world, but it DOES change ME.
Seek the will of God and do it! That's how it's
ReplyDeletedone! (my opinion)
When "I" try to control things, I end up in the ditch.
When God is in control,(free will!) It is eagles wings!
Intimate time with God brings blessings..
Blessing don't always bring intimate time with God. (my opinon)
Well said my friends!
ReplyDeleteIn response to your earlier post about whether or not beauty is relevant, and to the questions in this one, here is an excerpt from the "closing chat" in Andrew Loomis' Creative Illustration (even though he was "just an illustrator"):
ReplyDeleteLet us as artists, then, feel that we have a trust. Let us be sincere, if for no other reason than to give our craft character. Let us choose to reproduce beauty rather than the sordid, if only to elevate the standards of beauty. If we seek an audience to our way of expression, let us make the things we have to say worth while. When we have a choice, let us build, not tear down. If we are endowed with the vision to encompass beauty, let us be grateful, but not selfish about it. To live and work only to please one's self, using art as a means of display for uncontrolled temperment and undisciplined license, for divorcing oneself from the normal and ethical standards of life, to my mind is wrong. Art belongs to life, and essentially to the common, everyday man.
Connie ... Now thats what I am talking about.....
ReplyDeletecheck out Twice a Week .... Mick painted an object from my Patio Deck in Auburn
Great news but sorry to hear about your wrists. I do hope you get them sorted and are back painting...pain if horrible when you have to work through it. All the best
