Award Winning Photographer... Michael Kirby

I've had the pleasure to become friends with Michael Kirby. He is the award winning photographer for our local newspaper the Auburn Journal.  In fact photography is a passion that came late in life. He is a sign painter by trade. His father had a sign painting business and young Michael grew up as an apprentice and took over his father's business. He has the artists eye and photography was the natural extension for his creative outlet.  He is also a writer and he is the guy who wrote the article about me in the local paper. Somehow we have clicked and I now count him as a buddy.

He wanted a portrait and we traded a portrait for some window signage and some name plates to go over my artwork. He really is good and he has designed an etched glass looking design that will go on the glass door of the gallery.

He came in last week and posed for this portrait. He is always outdoors and is very sun tanned. Thats why his face looks so red. We talked and his hand was always around his face so I included it in the painting.... he's a cool dude!

My painting " Rhopsody in Orange " is currently in a juried show at the Blue Line Gallery in Roseville Ca. It sold. Yeah!

A Cemetery is a great place to paint!

9 x 12 plein air oil on panel

Well.... Its been awhile and I should be minding the store but I just needed to post something otherwise you all may feel that I am sleeping on the job. The Gallery has been quite an undertaking and its been quite an adjustment painting in the gallery. But I like the new space and I am sure I will gain my footing and total concentration soon enough.

I've sold a painting and Saturday's seem to be the day that window shoppers and prospective buyers step into the Gallery and browse the wares. The Gallery also doubles as my teaching space and this past week was packed with scheduling and arranging the furniture and rugs to allow students to paint.

The Auburn price for 4 consecutive 3 hour classes is $160. Anymore and the locals complain by not signing up. I am also starting a plein air class on Fridays and there seems to be some interest for that.

On Friday, I took the class to our Old Cemetery. It's very well manicured and hosts some marvelous trees that are old sentinels of bygone Gold Rush Fever Days. Some died as a result of that fever and they are buried here. It was overcast with some fast moving clouds in the distance. The tall cypress trees looked gallant against the cloud filled sky with whispers of cobalt blue remaining defiant. I was moved by the silhouetted appearance of the trees against the sky and we all painted this scene together. There was so much green in that dark cypress! When we started we were in overcast shade and toward the end of our session the sun bullied the clouds out of the way and gave us some wondrous backlit light and glints of water highlighting the monuments.

I traded some paintings for 3 Persian rugs. Pictured above is an antique 10 foot beauty. I have 2 more in the backroom gallery. The price of the paintings just went up!

I also traded a portrait for some window signage and some custom name signs to hang over the art.

Jana and I decided this was the time to spring for a new iMac and now this sweet piece of metal is blazing sweet. In fact I can still run my CS1 suite on it and Photoshop is working just fine ... so far. Jan was listening to Clark Howard on the radio and she learned that if we purchased one of those Verizon Android phones we could also tether it and use it as a modem in the Gallery. And sure enough... for the cost of the LG Ally , $100 , and 30 dollars for internet I now have internet at the Gallery.

I am also bringing in some other artists and I am turning the Gallery into a co-op.

A is for Gilbert

oil on panel 11 x 14

Its been go go go since ArtWalk and I hit the wall today. My buddy Mick McGinty  of " Twice a Week" emailed me after I commented on his latest masterpiece. He asked me ... what are you doing at the computer ... who's minding the store? I actually was across the street taking advantage of $2 beers and $1 tacos at the Club Car Restaurant. I was digesting all I have been through and reading the latest issue of International Artist Magazine which features a nice article by my friend Jim Gurney. He is a national treasure.

It occurred to me that I would not trade these past few weeks for anything. I have come home exhausted usually around six and I give my last energy and love to my family.

But I have to tell you about someone who has really touched my heart and I thank him in ways he does not even know. The painting above is of a 81 year old man who rides his bike all around Auburn donning his eclectic eccentric cap. His name is " Gilbert" and everyone in Auburn either knows him, has a story about him, or at least seen him on his bicycle. He is very careless on that bike and has been hit literally 10 times. The last time landed him in the hospital. Most people would give up. Not Gilbert. He rides solo around town like a Paul Revere around Auburn spreading the warning that a complacent Life is a sad thing. He is on a mission to spred joy. I hear his honk from his horn and my face lights up ... " Gilbert is around". I get him . I get what he is trying to do but that is not true for everyone. He likes to hang around and chat and some people are not too comfortable with that. He is actually banned from some eating establishments. Sad.

Gilbert is Local. He has lived in these parts all his life and he was a Tail gunner on those death coffins called B-17's during WW2. He got that assignment after he flew the P-40 many times and complained to his captain that it was too slow. He said ... " I'm going to get killed in that sonna va bitch"! Yeah. 2 out 3 of those fighting steel cages never came back from their mission. Gilbert has a Guardian Angel.

Gilbert has never learned to read or write . I talked to a man who has known Gilbert since 1938 and he told me... Yeah... Gilbert has always been a little quirky. You know... I LIKE quirky . And I like a man who has courageously served his country.

Gilbert told me that people love him. He said that when his wife died that he went to pieces. He adored her. He mentioned that if it wasn't for his friends that he would not be here.

I look forward to each day now when Gilbert sounds his horn and he walks in and sits himself down in my chair and starts talking. We all need to talk. And Gilbert knows that intuitively. He's not one of those ol folks pinning their time away watching TV. He is out and about and he does his rounds everday talking and meeting with his friends.

He told me tonight as I visited him at his elderly Apartment Complex, You have a gift from Jesus Frank... You are Powerful.

I guess when you do have a gift from Jesus you have to be powerful. Gilbert loves Life and wants to go out swinging.

 He is my new Hero.

I will be publishing postcards of this portrait. Locals are already lining up for copies.

Thanks Gilbert!

Always an Adventure ... Auburn ArtWalk tonight

I was an active member of the Screen Actors Guild for all of 1 afternoon as an extra for a Matte Shot for the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I was paid one dollar and essentially all I had to do was just sit on a bale of hay and hold a staff. It was really hard work. But I think I should have negotiated for more than a dollar even if I was on the LucasFilm payroll. If Charlie Sheen can make millions on an episode being stupid  ... well  ... what's a few hundred? ;v) Those were really fun and memorable days. I'm even wearing my " Revenge of the Jedi T'Shirt".

Its been nonstop working at the Gallery and getting ready for ArtWalk tonight in Auburn. There are paintings to hang and paintings to frame. Also I am preparing a schedule for classes to be taught at the Gallery which I will display on the windows.

I gave a lecture last week at the Gallery on the proper use of digital photography for your painting projects. 15 people showed up at the Gallery which was more than I had imagined would come. I guess the cost of $10 for an hour and a half talk was a good price.

Also Mary Bullock has finally started a Blog. She  writes inspirationally and has a way with words as well as with paint. Check it out!

More to come .....   the " Star Wars Pastor " who stopped by  ......  Gilbert Ortega aka " Mr. Auburn" or as my son would say " That crazy ol man who rides around town with a coon tail cap "...

Thought for the Week  .... Dissatisfaction is not the same as Unhappiness . Dissatisfaction is Not an excuse for Unhappiness. As artists we should be constantly stretching and exploring all the roads of this thing called Art. Often times we see our limitations and weaknesses and we can easily resolve that our dissatisfaction with our careers and status as an artist permits us to be unhappy. Folks ... let me tell you. I've made a living as an artist for 31 years . I've been the sole bread winner for a majority of those years and to this day. If I succumbed to being unhappy as a result of my Dissatisfaction with my Art , I know I surely would be divorced by now. Its okay to be dissatisfied  ... but your joy and happiness should not be solely hinged to your performance. Otherwise you will make all the friends around you miserable....
