On Easter

Its Passion week and usually I post some of my sacred art. This is a painting that I recently finished , like today , for a client. Its a scene from the old testament where Elisha multiplied the poor widows oil. I use models and I am grateful that many people agree to pose for my paintings. Where would I be without them?

In the painting above I used a traditional underpainting and then added color .

The painting of Jesus in the garden was painted in  Alla Prima . No underpainting and just an aggressive application of paint. This particular piece was used for a calendar several years back and I had the freedom to paint which ever way I desired. However, not all clients liked this look. The client that ordered the piece of the widow and children prefer a tighter rendering and I enjoy that style as well... although it sure is fun to fling that paint!

Denny Holland and the Ordaz...notice the chic artist black look.....

The Wired Artists Opening was fun and I will post pics of last fridays event next. Also, I have been working on a tryptich with 4 teenagers for an Easter Production. Its a large painting.... more pics on the way......

  1. Hey Frank, this is really great. I love the reserved color palate. You know, I can see a difference in your illustration work as of late. There is less detail but more refinement. You are a master at what you do.

  3. So that's where you have been, really really busy, first, hanging the show, and then, a painting deadline. Hope you can get some rest now. This is a lovely and meaningful work of art, very thoughtful in mood.

  4. I love the painting of Jesus in the Garden. The color and application of paint both combine to give it that magical emotional appeal.

So, what is in the leather pouch on top of your chic black outfit? Perhaps that's how you smuggle in your knife past security...I'm sure they'd never know.

  5. Beautiful, as always. You make it look easy.
That is one of the nicest paintings of Jesus I've seen. Something about it really draws me in, and the light is spectacular.

  7. I've always loved the story about the widow and the oil. A reminder that God can indeed bring something out of nothing. It gives hope and strength to continue on.

I like the colorful picture of Jesus. I love color. :)
