On Easter

Its Passion week and usually I post some of my sacred art. This is a painting that I recently finished , like today , for a client. Its a scene from the old testament where Elisha multiplied the poor widows oil. I use models and I am grateful that many people agree to pose for my paintings. Where would I be without them?

In the painting above I used a traditional underpainting and then added color .

The painting of Jesus in the garden was painted in  Alla Prima . No underpainting and just an aggressive application of paint. This particular piece was used for a calendar several years back and I had the freedom to paint which ever way I desired. However, not all clients liked this look. The client that ordered the piece of the widow and children prefer a tighter rendering and I enjoy that style as well... although it sure is fun to fling that paint!

The Wired Artists Opening was fun and I will post pics of last fridays event next. Also, I have been working on a tryptich with 4 teenagers for an Easter Production. Its a large painting.... more pics on the way......

On hanging a show at William Jessup University

Hanging a show by committee was a bit of a challenge at first but after awhile we all got into a rythym and the hanging and nailing process started to flow. Beth Rolphes of BlueLine Gallery in Roseville and I were in charge of hanging the artwork and given that the space in the Library had good light and a spacious post modern feeling the paintings pretty much suggested where they wanted to be. Tom Fluharty's painting of a Bald Guy had to be close to the entrance to stare down the visitors into this now sacred space. His painting is like a spirit of the security guard. Most of the buildings on campus were designed by the famous archtect Frank Gehry. The later additions and modifications were made to flow with his original conception.

The opening reception will be held this Friday in the Library by the main entrance at 5:30. It will be catered!

On Curating a Show at William Jessup University

I have had the pleasure to curate a show that will open at the William Jessup University Library April 15. The show runs until May 12. I was approached by Beth Rolphes of Blue Line Gallery in Roseville to come up with the first ever Art show at the University. And like all great ideas, while I was in the shower I thought of all the inspiring artists I have met online in the blogosphere that I would never have met if not for this powerfully  wired medium. So I just started to email a group of artists and it all came together.... not without a few hitches though. I originally contacted Stapleton Kearns , but with the passing of his father he had to bow out at the beginning.

The artists include Stephen Magsig , Thomas Fluharty , Mick McGinty , Chris Hopkins , Sally Tharp , Armand Cabrera , Frank Ordaz , Michael Dudash , Marc Hanson , Don Hatfield , Denny Holland , Robert Lemler , Terry Miura , Debra Pero and Janice Skivington.

More to come on this post ... but for now I got to get back to work and make some money! and ... I've done more on the Murphy portrait and I will post that too .....
